Writing for younger readers is important. Their minds are in the making, open to influence. Television caters for tinies during the day and jaded adults during the evening. For young people in between, though, there’s not always as much as they need between the extremes of the infantile and the over-sophisticated.
How young anyway is ‘in-between’?
All childhood and adolescence is growth and development. During school and even college years, younger readers want to be taken out of themselves, to try on mental and emotional costumes for size, from those of Bronze Age hunters to star-ship navigators, while also learning about themselves and their world.
To be an adult is to at least think one has arrived at a fixed and final state. Younger readers, though, want to read about people like themselves who can still change and learn. What an opportunity .
